We are approaching the middle of September. Some may refer to this time as late summer, while others may have a different perspective. The height of summer is often linked to the chaos of tourism, as millions of people gravitate towards popular destinations in the same month or weeks.

Why, one might ask. Let's not rush into conclusions. The answer to that question is undoubtedly complex. However, we can draw a simple conclusion: Habit formation is undeniably influential. Over the years and decades, we develop habits regarding where to go for a) sun vacations and b) when to go. Despite efforts by some European cities to promote sustainable tourism, the collective “we” continue to frequent the same destinations.

Media says “wait”, what about the environment

There is also the reality of when people can travel for their sun vacations. Jobs, family obligations and more only leave some time to go for vacation. To juxtapose that reality with tourism destination sustainability, it may seem daunting for the vacation goer that he/she has to consider the sustainability index of a particular destination. While media by and large, says “wait! Consider sustainability”, it may come as a small surprisee that the traveler shrugs his/her shoulders and says, “but these well known destinations are also the more affordable and where I have the option to travel in high season”.

Explore more, for sure

This alliteration also conceals a deeper meaning. For sure, explore more. But where do destination ideas come from? Well, media as a whole certainly plays a significant role in influencing tourists. Another point to keep in mind is the mind space available for travelers to come up with ideas for different places to go. After all, exploring new and thrilling destinations requires dedication and effort.

Late summer is here..

No matter where you choose to go this late summer; if you are on the path to a destination off the beaten path, or heading towards a well-traveled destination, have a great late summer!
